We're back from our short (1 week) vacation to Northern California! We came back yesterday so I haven't really had a chance to do much other than unpack, and do two loads of laundry (not yet folded though). So, please be patient and soon you'll see pictures and read about how Vince got sick (that's all for a preview!).
As I mentioned in my last post, I decided that it was time for a $25 food budget month. Why the drastic lowered amount? Well, we need to clean out the freezer, the pantry and I wanted to see how far $25 goes, with a stocked kitchen. Mind you, I really didn't "prepare" for this $25 month at all (it'll start in March, which is today!) but I did have a little extra in our food budget last month, and organic milk was on sale, so I bought 1 gallon of organic whole milk. In case you're wondering, our normal food budget is $135 per month. We also have a stockpile budget of $25.
This month, the goal is to only spend $25 on food items, and $20 on stockpile items (I mentioned $25 last post, I changed my mind!). We have a relatively stocked freezer, the only meat we're low on is chicken. Our veggie drawer was also a bit bare but that's because I tried to finish everything before we left on our trip last week.
So, after sorting through the mail last night and this morning, and looking through store fliers, I set out to go shop. The original plan was to go to Ralph's and the Asian markets but I was feeling a little crummy myself, so I went to the next best thing after Asian markets, and that's Stater Brothers. Vince's grandma told us Stater Brothers has even better Daikon than the 99 Ranch! The daikon maybe slightly more expensive but it's definitely sweet and not bitter like those from 99.
I stopped at SB and after realizing that I can get everything there instead of Ralph's (same prices this week), I decided to complete my shopping trip at SB. Here's what I got (no pics because I came home right before lunch time and had to take care of Vince who's still feeling crummy):
American Beauty Spaghetti (I had Barilla Plus coupon but AB is cheaper) $2.00 - SP 1 Stater Brothers Linguine $1.00 - SP 1 Stater Brothers Linguine $1.00 - GR 4 Chicken Thighs w/ Bone and Skin $1.70 - SP 8 Chicken Thighs w/ Bone and Skin $3.40 - GR 1.66 lb Bananas $1.11 - GR 2.5 lb Carrots $1.5 - GR 2.5 lb Carrots $1.5 - SP 1.5 lb Daikon $1.06 - GR 1.15 lb Green Cabbage $0.79 - GR 2.05 lb Napa Cabbage $1.41 - GR
Notice the designations SP and GR. SP stands for Stockpile and GR stands for Grocery. I split the chicken thighs and carrots because I would only use part of the pack in March; the rest will be used up next month. If I need to use the chicken I designated as SP, I will deduct it from the budget.
This shopping trip alone will provide enough vegetables for the next week. I want to get more greens though so I might or might not get 99 cent asparagus from Ralph's. But, I haven't decided yet! Spinach is also a good, cheap, healthy veggie.
So, as of today... here's the breakdown:
SP: $6.20 GR: $10.27
It's not too bad I guess but this leaves me with $15 to last the next 3 weeks for groceries and $13.8 for stockpile (I know the stockpile money will be gone by the end of this week though, because there's a great deal on toilet paper and paper towels at CVS). I think the grocery money will be used for some shrimp and ground pork, plus more veggies.
I'll keep you all updated! |
